Bone / Cartilage

Novotec successfully achieved several Research projects, in collaboration with academics, with small businesses and with international leading companies.

Bone tissue can be weakened by mechanical and pathological constraints. Autologous and heterologous grafts are often used, but synthetic bone substitutes that are biodegradable and without risk of pathogenic agent transmission are the best-suited solutions. Novotec contributed to the study of biocompatibility, matricial synthesis linked to mineralization phenomenon, and resorption of some bone substitutes. In this context, Novotec got involved in the study of an original animal model. The structure and the composition of roe deer antlers were studied before their fall and while growing back. The comparison with human bone allowed considering this model as innovative for the study of bone repair.

Closely linked to the bone, cartilage is a non-vascularized matricial tissue with few cells, which can’t regenerate itself in case of damage. The existing repair methods of the cartilage are not satisfactory. Today, the tissue-engineering emergence leads to foresee new experimental approaches. Novotec skills in these research and clinical projects are based on the knowledge of specific cartilage proteins (type II collagen, aggrecan) as well as on analysis techniques (histology, immunolabeling, in situ hybridization), to characterize the studied models.

Novotec also offers an in vitro approach for the study of molecules with modulator effect on the cellular and matricial phenotype of chondrocytes and osteoblasts.
